Favorite Things: Spring Cleaning!

May 1, 2013

Spring cleaning is so essential in our house. I don’t feel like our home is really clean until I have purged closets and scrubbed the floor on my hands and knees. Plus, there is something so intoxicating about a nice fresh scent in the home that comes from not only cleaning products, but just a CLEAN house! Ahhh…I love it.

I try to stay as far away from the harsh chemicals as possible. I really worry about the animals getting into them on accident, or licking a sanitized bathroom (which Luella and Darwin both do) right after I clean it. I made the “switch” to greener alternatives two years ago, and really do enjoy them. I find myself having less of a headache after I clean, not feeling dizzy or light headed, and not being totally wiped out after a full day of scrubbing.

The Method product line and Mrs. Meyer’s line are my two favorites. I actually enjoy how they smell. The only product I do not like is the window cleaner. It streaks and leaves me frustrated. I HAVE to use newspaper with this product if I do use it at all.

My two guilty pleasures when it comes to cleaning are paper towels (sorry trees!) and bleach. In small doses, neither are detrimental  but I use A LOT of paper towel every single day. I just hate the thought of a dirty rag tracking hair and crud all over my house…yuck. With bleach, I use a diluted solution to clean off heavily used surfaces (bathroom and kitchen areas) because that’s where germs develop quickly. Using bleach isn’t an every day routine, but when I use it, you can tell. The windows need to be open and everyone should probably evacuate.

For every day cleaning, there is nothing like a good scour pad, lemon, vinegar, and baking soda mix. Man, this is like the miracle of green cleaning. The scent is awesome, the combination of products in a squirt bottle makes for an easy application, and it’s just dirt cheap (haha…Pun :)). You can’t beat that with a stick.

Have you gotten a start on your spring cleaning? There’s no judging if you haven’t! My home state of Wisco was still experiencing winter like temps until the last few days! No one wants to spring clean when it’s 35 out!

Tell me more about your “every day” cleaning solution – the lemon, vinegar & baking soda mixture. What measurements of each do you use? Do you just keep it in a squirt bottle all the time? Sounds like a great smelling concoction!

Hey Lindsay! This is my “recipe”: 1/4 cup white vinegar, 2 Tbsp. baking soda, 1 liter (4 c.) hot water, 1/2 a lemon. I keep a small batch on hand for every day use at all times. I probably make a new bottle of week or so!
